Apameia - Myrleia / Απάμεια - Μύρλεια

The town was founded as a colony of the Colophonians and was originaly named Bryleion. Since about 330 BC it was called Μύρλεια (Myrleia or Myrlea). 433 BC the city became a menber of the Attic-Delian League. At the end of the 4th c. BC it belonged to the kingdom of Mithradates II of Kios. Philip V of Macedon took the town during his war against the king of Pergamon. The city was detroyed  and given to his ally, King Prusias I of Bithynia, who fortified and enlarged it - indeed almost rebuilt it - around 202 BC, renaming it Ἀπάμεια (transcribed as Apameia, Apamea, or Apamia), after his wife, Apama III.

The place was on the south coast of the Gulf of Erdek of the Marmara Sea, 1 km south-east of the modern Mudanya, and northwest of Bursa, then called Prusa, for which it served as a port.

The Romans took the city 72 BC, during the 3rd Mithradatic war, and made Apameia a colonia, apparently in the time of Augustus, or perhaps Julius Caesar, in view of the adjective "Iulia" that appears on its coins under Roman rule. Its earlier coins were stamped Ἀπαμέων Μυρλεάνων, but in Roman times they bore the label C.I.C.A. (= Colonia Iulia Concordia Apamea). Apameia was looted by the Goths 257/8 AD, and coin minting ended at that time..
